Shandragh Artists
Shandragh, Rathlin Island, is the home of
Penny Sewell and Paddy Burns, Sculptors, Woodcarvers and Artists,
who are in the process of establishing a home/studio workshop
and eventually accommodation for a few hardy souls.
Our partly restored house was built in the 1860s as a
dwelling for a stock manager on the landlords estate, however,
it had been built on the site of an older farm village which
in turn was built on the site of an older farm village which
in turn was built on successively older sites back to the Neolithic
period about 4000 years ago.

Many Neolithic artefacts have been unearthed
during building or gardening and very often a routine days gardening
becomes something of an archaeological endeavour
.
Paddy and Penny specialise in Woodcarving
but also make furniture, stonewalls, jewellery and have many
plans for the future.
"Our carving is
inspired by our surroundings and draws from
the many local stories myths and legends
King Donn, farther of princess Taise of
Glen Taise for example, the sea and constant
presence of Mannanan Mc Lir and many others
real and mythical. The garden in summer
is a splash of colour and the view is rather
special."
"As we are in the
process of building/ gardening/carving and
couldnt really be considered equipped
to deal with a large number of day to day
visitors, we would ask that if you wish
to visit Shandragh and ourselves, that you
please give us a call and make a time."
