Contemporary Cullybackey

As we stroll through the village today we see in essence that the basic structure of the settlement has changed little over the last century. The population has increased substantially and many new homes have been constructed around the village. However, the basic layout remains very much the same.

The Cuningham Memorial Presbyterian Church stands guard proudly beside the River Maine and still plays its very active part in community life.

Still standing sentinel on the opposite bank of the River Maine is the Methodist Church, although no longer used for worship, having been replaced by a more commodious structure erected on the Shellinghill Road.

The new Methodist Church, Shellinghill Road, opened in 1969

Running along side this church is the Kilrea Road, which acts as one of the "gateways" into the village. This road is quite densely planted and is wonderfully atmospheric and peaceful to travel along. This particular area is known locally as the "Plantation". From the road one has one’s first impressions of the village, the majesty of the Cuningham Church with its spire rising gracefully, the roof of the Methodist Church and its adjoining graveyard and the expanse of the village spread out before one. One also has an excellent panorama of the Holm Field, lying behind the Cuningham Church and sweeping along the edge of the river. Cullybackey Environmental Improvement Association hope to turn this field into a Community Park with woodland, wetland features, etc for the enjoyment of all the community and visitors alike. (Please refer to our improvement plans page).
